Julie L

A lifelong collector, Julie is drawn to quirky, weathered, and overlooked objects from the natural world, including forgotten treasures and things others might discard. Throughout her life, she gathered sea urchins, shells, and skeletal fragments, captivated by their patterns, textures, and quiet resilience. That early fascination continues to shape her artistic practice today.

Her work focuses on finding beauty in what appears broken or undervalued. She feels a deep empathy for discarded objects, imagining the hands that once crafted them and the stories they hold. Reimagining these fragments mirrors her interest in people who feel similarly overlooked—fragile, scarred, yet enduring.

Influenced by Art Nouveau and enriched by years living overseas, especially in Ireland, she later studied at the Adelaide Central School of Art. Her lifelong love of dogs also threads through her creative world. Sculpting small dog figures has become a soothing, grounding ritual for her, inspired in part by her own beloved dog, Maisy.

At the heart of her practice is a love for the unlovable and a resistance to waste: a belief that even the most forgotten things carry beauty, history, and worth.
